You may have heard it said "there
is no such thing as bad publicity... except when they are reporting on
your funeral". I won't go quite as far
as that, but this statement does very
accurately sum up the power of publicity. People and businesses use press

The problem is how to make publicity
to work for you. With

form of media how can you expect that your message will ever get

say the local donut shop takes out a half page ad in the newspaper,

lets say that the same donut shop writes up a story, celebrating forty
years in business through three generations, all
about the family's immigrant past, pictures of how the place looked
forty years ago and how the business survived after the big fire twelve
years ago, and so on. This incredible human interest
story makes the front page of the local
section and is mentioned on both radio and television for
free. Understanding the

you is the question. To answer that you must back up
and understand
the way today's under budgeted and overworked news departments
operate. The day's of Bob Woodward
clandestine gum shoe reporting is a relic of romantic history. More
likely in today's news organization, the "Journalist" will rarely even
get to leave their desks for a potty break, due to budget and
productivity demands. Instead this new breed of reporter must
rely
heavily on people like you to bring the story to them, so they can hit
their deadline. This
is not to mean that you can scratch your idea on a cocktail napkin and
pass it to a reporter and expect to see it on the evening news. No. When dealing with professional
journalist there are rules to follow. But,
once these rules are understood and ascribed to, you can reasonably
expect that your message will be picked up and transmitted via the news
networks. Submitting a Story: First
you must learn how to construct your story so that the media will see
it
as something they can use. If what you want reported on is not in the
proper format it will be rejected, and further correspondence from you,
will be looked upon negatively. Conversely,
a good newsworthy story put into the correct format will be welcomed
because it
will mean that you have done much of the work for this overburdened
news organization and they will look to you for
help to meet deadlines again and again. You do the work so they don't have
to! But what
if you don't have a good newsworthy story: Good
question! Let's say you don't have a story that spans three
generations,
no immigrant past or a past history of adversity to catch someone's
attention. Don't
worry. Think
about the news as it is today. Tonight, watch the news. Are you more
likely to see your local news program close with an in-depth story
explaining how the latest local governmental decision will
drastically change your life or a story about clothes-wearing
kittens that dance? Sadly, it
will probably be the dancing kittens in spandex! I will
